What’s In A Quote?
Posted by admin on November 26th, 2008 filed in UncategorizedIf one is to open up the daily newspapers, I am very sure that they would stumble upon a torrent of quotes. Whether it is said by politicians, authors or sports persons, we are faced with quotes every single day of our lives. However, one of the most talked about are definitely football quotes especially those spoken by football club managers. Some of the famous football managers of top football clubs who are often in the media spotlight are Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger, Sir Alex Ferguson and Rafa Benitez.
Of that list, Jose Mourinho woule probably stand out as some of this quotes have either ruffled or “inspired” some parties. For example, he said “As we say in Portugal, they brought the bus and they left the bus in front of the goal” after Chelsea’s goalless draw against Tottenham Hotspur. Ever since then, there have been several managers who used the term “bus parking” to point out the negative tactics deployed by the opposing teams. Another example of famous football quotes by Mr. Mourinho has to be “The linesman scored the goal. No-one knows if that shot went over the line and you must be 100%” which was said after the match against Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final 2005.
Besides these sarcastic comments, there are also inspirational football quotes spoken by either managers or players. Such quotes encompass the hard work, dedication and determination of the team after it has achieved success. One of my favourite quotes has to be Archie Griffen’s “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.” He’s basically saying that players should not fear their opponents who are far superior in terms of physical strength or success but to give their best.
I have a few more favourites which are american football quotes said by coach and motivational teacher Vincent Lombardi. One of his quotes – “I firmly believe that any man’s finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle-victorious” have changed my life completely. It has taught me that the taste of success is sweet but it does not come easily.
